Do You Have Adult Acne?

Acne is not just for adolescents. Adult acne surprisingly affects half of all adult women and a quarter of all adult men - and is on the rise. Even if you did not have acne growing up, it is not uncommon to develop it later in life. But, the good news is that with the right skin care regime, you can be on your way to healthy skin that is as soft and smooth as your baby's!

Although the exact cause of adult acne has not been pin-pointed, the right adult acne treatment can be found. It is thought that one cause of adult acne is due to hormones, in particular, the unbalanced hormone production during the menstrual cycle. What is the solution? Find an adult acne product that will work to control the hormone production within the skin to avoid high levels of the DHT hormone that causes skin lesions.

There are many adult acne skin care products, but adult acne is generally treated similarly to adolescent acne. Usually, topical acne products like topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid are used. Making changes to the skin care regime can improve adult acne as well. Since most acne medications heighten skin's sensitivity to sunlight, sun protection is vital. If you like your skin to have a summer's glow all year round, try a sunless tan instead of hitting the tanning salon. Also, when choosing cosmetics and skin products, choose one that is noncomedogenic so it does not clog pores.

Adult skin is more sensitive and dryer than adolescent skin, so it is important to gently wash the face with mild facial cleansers. Also, use a soft washcloth, rather than a harsh loofah sponge, to help prevent irritation and the spread of acne. Acne is not caused by dirt, so washing with a face cleanser more than twice a day may hurt your skin rather than help it. Also, be sure to use a light moisturizer daily to prevent dryness and keep your skin looking fresh.

Just remember, acne treatments take time, so be patient. Usually it takes between six weeks and three months to really determine whether or not a specific treatment is working. Hang in there. In time, you, too, will break free of your breakouts!
